Update for 2011 Texas Ashiatsu classes

Just a quick update: December's Barefoot Basics is now full, which will cap off a total of 64 new Ashiatsu therapists trained in this year in that class by me! Congratulations to those of you who made it in and are (or will be soon) using a great new tool to massage with -your feet!

I can't fit any more Barefoot Basics classes in this year, unless someone figures out how to clone me, but I did squeeze in an Ashi-Thai on December 15-16th. If you want those toes trained by 12/31/11, that really really is your last chance in Texas!

Does Ashiatsu massage the front side of the body?

Of course Ashiatsu also works on the anterior aspect of the body!!!

For the Texas AOBT trained therapists out there, this blog's for you:

As
Toes on the nose:

Nope - we don't massage the face or the abdomen, but Anterior/Sidelying (I'm going to call it A/S since it's so long to type out!) not only continues the flow of Barefoot Basics strokes onto the front side of the body - it also gets very specific and works on the areas that "knead" it most, even if your clients don't think that's where the problems really lie. You know better than that - with this class under your belt, you can flip them over and give some work inspired by Rolfing and Myofascial Release with your feet! In class, we teach you a simple 15 minute protocol for Anterior, and a 20 minute protocol for Sidelying that will hit everything you wish you were already working on. Check out this picture of Veronica's Upper Traps and Levator being lengthened and muscle stripped with ease. Now she can stop wearing those shoulders like earrings, it's just a small example of the many things you'll learn in one quick day! Wait until you feel the QL release! If you are an AOBT trained LMT, and if you haven't taken this course yet, what are you waiting for?! Prereq's are successfull completion of Barefoot Basics and an active LMT license.

A/S Class Schedule:

Advanced Ashiatsu (AKA DF2/Fusion)

It's coming not this weekend, but NEXT! Class is Friday-Sunday September 16-18 in San Antonio. If you are an AOBT graduate, already finished your A/S training, have about 6-9 months of Barefoot Basics practice, AND have your AOBT Certification completed, then talk to me so we can discuss if you are ready to learn the double footed Ashiatsu strokes! It is HARD, so I will be completely honest with you if I think you are ready for it. Here's some tips from Mary-Claire on how to prepare (I love how I can rhyme her name with so many things!)

Shoestring budget?

I am now a vendor for Earthlite! I can get you 15% off anything from Earthlite, INCLUDING the extra special custom Ashiatsu table! (Depending on options you choose, it starts at $345 - fully custom, free shipping - perfect for AOBT.)

I just ordered the Armrest Bolsters ($38.25 after discount) and with a little practice on my footing, it really has helped me keep my clients arms where I want them - they don't roll way forward and off the front of the table, and if the client would rather have their arms lay on the table, they can now rest a little wider out on these extenders, and there is still the normal room on the table next to their waist for me to stand! Surf Earthlite and email me with whatever supplies you want, I'll put in the order and get you that discount!

See you in class!

Ashi around the world

I'm back from my trip to Germany! It was great, and the new Ashiatsu therapists in Weisbaden are amazing! Trying to figure out how to explain the Ashi-bar construction using the metric system was the hardest part ;) Dawn (our super fantastic awesome host and assistant instructor who's an Advanced Ashi and Ashi-Thai trained graduate) arranged a fabulous training site for us on the Weisbaden Army base. Petra and Sabine are the dynamic Deutchland duo, graduates from the very first European Barefoot Basics class. Thanks Miss Dawn, Corey, KC, and all our amazing Weisbaden bodies that we massaged, y'all made it awesome! Here is our group, Petra, Sabine, Miss Dawn and myself in the Weisbaden Ashiatsu training room!:

This past weekend was the TAMT (Texas Association of Massage Therapists) 10th annual convention in Ft Worth, where I taught 2 intro to Ashiatsu classes, and demonstrated the work at a booth. We showed how versatile Ashi can be at an event - we worked through clothing using Ashi-Thai and the Ashi-Anma techniques, and worked directly on the skin with the moves we are best known for from our Barefoot Basics, Anterior/Sidelying and Advanced Ashi classes. Thanks to Jamie, Robyn, Adella, Susan and Cindy for all their help at the booth, Super thanks to all the "Purple Shirts" for everything, to Terry for his awesome history lessons, and to Shelli for a FANTASTIC time :D

Summer Season

Well, 1 more class to go in my busy summer schedule of workshops! Since I last posted, I've trained 3 more Ashi-therapists in the highest level of Ashiatsu training, and taught Ashi-Thai in Dallas to a full class of 8. Tomorrow I start Barefoot Basics in San Antonio, and then on Wednesday..... I get to actually massage!!! I don't think I've worked a full week on my own clients all summer!

Here's some class pictures of the amazing therapists I've worked with in the past 2 weeks. In Advanced Ashi we had April, Alyssa and William from Texas and Arkansas:

And from yesterday's Ashi-Thai class, here's my gals Sharon, Jennifer, Glory, Jamie, Shannon, Pam, Jen and Mary from Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Nebraska, and of course big 'ol Texas:

Wing Walker

After being an Ashiatsu therapist for 7 years, I gotta say, it's not like I know everything! Back when I learned "Barefoot Basics", the double footed strokes were mixed in there too. Three intense days of learning everything that is still in the beginners course, plus about half of what is in the "DF2" or "Advanced Ashiatsu" course. When I took the "Fusion" class, probably about three years later, I learned even more doubles and the flow that makes it all come together. How did I ever remember all that after taking each class only once!??! Yah, well, I didn't!

Would you ever take a class from someone who took a course only once, or even worse, learned it from just a DVD, and thought they are good enough to teach the same material to the masses? Uhh, NO! Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy's founder Ruthie prides herself on teaching her instructors in person, in detail and in depth so that we can bring the real stuff back to our classes.

As an instructor for AOBT, we first go through an intense 6 month apprenticeship program and learn Barefoot Basics and Anterior/Sidelying inside and out directly from Ruthie. I re-learned the basic strokes and figured out everything that goes on behind the scenes for each workshop. There was a black eye, lots of sweat and tears while I trained to be an instructor last year, but there's just as much fun, good times and great massage too!

When we are ready to teach a new level class, the instructors are required to re-train with Ruthie on that particular subject. So, I went out to Denver last week and immersed myself into all things Ashiatsu all over again to learn how to teach Advanced Ashiatsu course! We study, practice and re-hash every detail all night, and teach it to the class under her supervision all day. I was there for almost a week, and came back more in love with Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy than ever before. (As if that is possible!)

After showing Ruthie my foot work and watching me teach, she helped to perfect every possible thing you could think of so that I can pass that knowledge onto my students. How to explain what is happening, how to demonstrate it, how to modify it, how to make it fun, how to make it safe, ect. I brought back an oldie-but-a-goodie and taught Ruthie how to explain the "Cowbell" move as it was taught by my first Ashi Instructor Janette - Ruthie had forgotten all about that little gem! I was proud to see that I had pretty much maintained the correct body mechanics and application all these years for those tough strokes. (I just need to shrink the travelling distance that my big 'ol feet naturally want to take during the Butterflies!) You should have seen Ruthie pour her heart out while teaching, it's amazing. Ashiatsu really is her baby and it shows, she loves this work more than anything.

Anyways, I had a blast and am more proud to be a part of this awesome modality working with such an AMAZING team of instructors than ever before. We rock. I did learn a new stroke that wasn't in the book back in my day... or maybe I forgot it (There, I said it, I admit that I forgot a stroke!) the "Wing Walkers"! Thats a fun one.

Here's the class from Denver last week with Ruthie, Kina and I teaching. I learned more from y'all then you know!

All Thai'd up in San Antone

Not long after my Ashi-trip to Portland, classes started back up in San Antonio again! I had a wonderful one-on-one private 3 day workshop with Diana, teaching her Barefoot Basics with my sole attention on her... she's going to be a barefoot diva!
Media_httpi71photobuc_zbier

Just two days later the Ashi-Thai class started, completely full with experienced and talented Ashiatsu therapists - we had so much fun learning how to tie our clients up into pretzels!
